Week 1: crash and burn

Today was the first day David and I taught primary sunday school. The kids were 7 and 8 years old. They were mostly boys and about half were very reverent and raised their hands and the other half was jabbing each other in the sides and talking about the plot in Harry Potter. I've been teaching the adult Sunday school for the last year and made the mistake of creating a lesson that wasn't geared to the attention span of children. There were no games or treats or activities. I even got into a mini argument with a lip-y boy visiting our ward.

Me: Shhh... we need to be reverent.
Boy: Why do I even have to listen to you?
Me (sarcastically): Because I'm in a position of authority.
Boy: Nah-uh.
Me: Yes, you're just a little boy.
Boy (under his breath): You're just a little girl.
David: Anyway, onto our lesson about purity...

Leave it to say we (mostly me) need to reevaluate how we teach the lesson, how we keep children engaged and how we use positive reinforcement instead of getting snappy. I feel like the parents of our students are taking a big leap of faith entrusting their children to me. I'm pretty much oblivious to the ways of the child. As a woman it is both pleasing and disheartening to see how well my husband interacts with kids.

  1. Hahaha.
I always ask Seth to switch callings with me, he's much better with kids than I am too.
    Good luck!

  2. This is great! One of our first callings in EG was teaching the valiant boys. It is HARD work. Boys are crazy. I'm sure you'll get the hang of it soon! Good luck!!
