When I was 2 my mom made me a bee costume, since I am not in the mood to make anything- cost (to my sanity), time and appreciation just didn't add up. So, when I saw this $5 second-hand bee costume at the local baby consignment store I forced it upon my son. Luckily, he actually liked it, which only fed my super sentimental pregnant mentality. Since I like themes we started off as a family of bugs. I was a ladybug, Eli was a bee and David was a grasshopper ("hopper" as requested by Eli.) For our church trunk or treat I made bunch of giant tissue paper flowers to turn our car into a garden, but I started throwing up at the pre carnival- lovely, I know- and never got to use them. They just sat piled on my desk taunting me until I decided I was going to be a flower for Halloween instead of a ladybug. My husband says that every year I'm always changing my costume up until the last possible moment- I have a streak of indecision. But, with so many fun events to attend why not?
David's grasshopper costume was made out of a couple of our old moving boxes. I made the head piece and David made the wings. I was pretty impressed with our creativity on this one. It was free, recyclable and fun to put together. Plus, he actually wore it in public! I like a man who isn't afraid to go all out and have some fun. I know it really made Halloween magical for Eli who got really excited when we'd all get dressed up. This was the first year Eli had an interest in what was going on and it was exciting to share in his enthusiasm.
We also, went to Zoo Boo this year where Eli got to go trick or treating at all the decorated animal exhibits. It was over 80 degrees and there were a million people so we were not in costume wearing or picture taking moods. Eli's favorite animals were the polar bears and the lions, which he called "Lion King."
This week Eli's been reading books about pumpkins and jack-o-lanterns and was looking forward to carving our pumpkin. When we started cutting the top of our pumpkin he repeatedly shouted "boo!" until he saw what was inside. He looked, but he refused to touch anything. David carved a basic pumpkin face and when he showed Eli, Eli started to cry and said over and over, "sharp teeth."
When we went trick or treating Eli caught on very quickly that when you hand people your bag they give you candy and candy tastes really good. We let him eat a few pieces, but when we said enough he threw a colossal tantrum. He's usually very easily distracted from throwing a fit, but not when we come between him and his sugar fix apparently, ha.
